July 10, 2005

Call to Order by President Bill Munkacsy at the Prusch Park Meeting Hall at 10:50 A.M. There were not enough Board members present for a quorum.

President Bill Munkacsy                    Treasurer Tony Bassano

Vice President Linda Delgado           Program Director Bill Kurtz

            Secretary Sandy Carter

Past President Wes Briggs

               Associate Director Rowena Southwell

               Associate Director Chuck Breese

            Associate Director Richard Deming

LAST MONTH’S MINUTES for the Board of Directors Meeting on May 8, 2005 were reviewed, and no changes were indicated.

TREASURER: The current bank account balance is $7,416 as of July 9, 2005. Tony wants to resign the Treasurer position, as soon as we can get a replacement for him.

MEMBERSHIP: There are a total of 88 new and returning members. There have been no new memberships for this past month.

HOSPITALITY: We are looking for someone to take over this area of responsibility. Bill Kurtz has graciously offered to help out with this until someone steps up and takes it over.

The August PROGRAM will be a slide show presentation given by our President, Bill Munkacsy, from his recent trip to Chile last fall.

LIBRARY:  The California Water Company, where Vice-President Linda Delgado works at, donated a book, “California Gardening” to our club’s library. Many thanks! Bill and Joan Kurtz will be purchasing $100-$200 worth of books for our library while at the CSSA convention this August.

AFFILIATE:  Several members from our club will be attending the CSSA convention this August 5-10 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

MINI SHOW:  Nothing new to report.

ANNUAL SHOW:  Tony Bassano is working on the final fiscal information for the Show and Sale.

Some of the issues/concerns are:

§       The custodial fees are still pending for Buchser Middle School.

§       The location of the show at Buchser School may be a drawback to attendance. Maybe we can piggyback from another craft show or fair for better visibility.

§       Poor attendance partly attributed to the loss of the County Fair plots, which generated interest.

§       It was suggested that we have a second Show and Sale in the fall.

§       Also suggested, is to have our Show and Sale at one of our club member’s location, such as at Don Cravalho’s nursery.

§       We didn’t have as many plant vendors this year, or the variety of plants for sale.

§       People are more looking for landscaping plants or plants that are in bloom.

§       There are not adequate road signs near and around Buchser School to point people towards our event. It was suggested to contact the City of Santa Clara next year to see if they will issue us a permit to put out signs.

BY-LAWS:  Nothing new to report.

§       A good idea was suggested to include advertisements for our club’s growers on the last page of our courier. Maybe, even to open up a personal want ads page. This might generate some enthusiasm from our members to exchange plants they are looking for, are giving away, or selling.

§       Our club has a number of trophy and ribbon prizes that are no longer being used, which we would like to part with. They could either be donated to the CSSA, donated to Children’s clubs as awards, cut-out and remounted, or photographed and put on our club’s web-site as a tribute to the names contained on them. We are looking for suggestions.

§       In 2006, we might need to have our monthly meetings on the 2nd Sunday of the month, instead of the 1st Sunday, due to scheduling with Prusch Park. Bill Kurtz will keep us informed if there are to be any changes.

§       $20.00 was paid to Bill Munkacsy for the 4-door prize plants he brought in for this month’s club meeting.

§       Bill Kurtz has several boxes of old CSSSJ couriers and a large wooden bookshelf that he would like to find a new home for.

OLD BUSINESS: Nothing to report.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:50 A.M.

The next Board meeting will be on August 7, 2005, at the Prusch Park Meeting Hall at

10:30 A.M.
